We are Roanoke Star Cycling; a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation organized and operated by talented and passionate volunteers who are dedicated to the growth of youth mountain biking.
Our mission is to promote high quality instruction to youth cycling at a competitive and non-competitive level. We strive to teach the importance of teamwork, community, goal-setting, and fostering a healthy lifestyle in a supportive, fun, and safe environment. We believe cycling has the power to strengthen minds and bodies while promoting a sense of community and belonging.
Our vision Roanoke Star Cycling is dedicated to fostering a community of riders who not only excel in the sport of cycling but also grow into confident, resilient and responsible citizens. We envision a future where our team members, driven by their shared love for cycling, inspire positive change, engage in the community, embrace healthy lifestyles, and develop lifelong values of teamwork, determination, and respect. With unwavering commitment to their growth and well-being, we aim to be the catalyst for the next generation of champions both on and off the bike.
Our goal is to work towards a future where our program is the premier youth cycling league in the east coast providing the best opportunities for our athletes on a competitive and non-competitive level.
We offer membership to boys and girls between 7 and 18. Racing has always been a major part of what we do, however, it is not required. Our program allows kids to develop a mastery of mountain biking skills and have fun with new friends, all while participating in a sport that can lead to a lifetime of active enjoyment.
Roanoke Star Cycling is powered not only by passionate coaches and riders, but also by a group of dedicated volunteers who serve on our Board of Directors. These are community members, parents, and cycling enthusiasts who care deeply about giving young people the chance to grow through mountain biking. They help guide our programs, support our mission, and make sure our team has what it needs to ride, learn, and thrive.

As an educator and outdoor enthusiast I've alwasy loved helping young people discover ways to learn, grow, and connect with thier peers through the great outdoors. Working with RSC brings together my love for the outdoors, education, and youth sports in the best possible way. My daughters have been riding with their teammates for almost a decade, and I’m so grateful for the lifelong friendships and love of adventure they’ve built along the way. I too have developed so many wonderful friendships and memories with our amazing coachhes, parents and riders.
Mountain biking inspires me in so many different ways! I love the simplicity of being in nature and pushing myself physically. I love that it brings me to amazing places around the world. I love that it has helped me form life long firendships and bonds by sharing challenges, adventures and beautiful places with family and friends.

Watching the RSC family embrace my son when he joined the team two years ago was an amazing experience. He joined the rec team because he thought it would be fun and now mountain biking and the kids on this team are part of our lives every single day. I want to help make sure the program thrives so the next kid who thinks mountain biking might be fun will have a biking family to welcome them with open arms.
I love to be outdoors. Whether it be mountain biking or trail running, being out on a trail makes everything else go away and calms your soul. There is no better place to be.

I'm a lifelong mountain biker. I bought my first mtb way back in the 20th century; an early 90's fully rigid Specialized Rockhopper. I enjoy riding uphill as much as downhill and Carvin's Cove is my happy place. A meditative spin up Thousand Foot Climb or a flowy rip on Rock N Roll makes any day better.
I am a Civil Engineer turned Endurance Coach; at this point in my life I find my purpose in coaching kids in cycling and running. The world is increasingly complex and kids need adult mentors to support them - Have Fun, Work Hard, Be Kind is my mantra with all my teams. I'm also passionate about Virginia's Blue Ridge and building strong communities here. RSC is an outstanding organization and gives me a perfect outlet to serve all these passions at once.
I chose to serve the kids and families of RSC because I genuinely love being in the woods on my bike and wanted to share that joy with others. There’s something special about watching kids discover confidence, resilience, and fun on the trail. Being part of RSC gives me the chance to help create those moments—supporting families, building community, and encouraging kids to fall in love with the outdoors in a safe, positive, and empowering way.
Mountain biking inspires me because it brings together challenge, freedom, and a deep connection to the outdoors. Every trail offers something new whether it’s a moment of calm in the woods, a chance to push myself, or an opportunity to celebrate small wins. It reminds me to stay present, stay curious, and keep growing. Sharing that sense of adventure and possibility with young riders inspires me even more.
RSC has almost been a lifeline for my family. As newcomers to the area, the RSC family welcomed us, and we have made many friends whilst my son's love for recreational riding has grown into XC racing. I want to keep the friendly, social, welcoming, healthy benefits of RSC going. Mountain biking inspires me to get outside, enjoy the outdoors and be brave on a bike! I also coach and like to refer to myself as the "slow coach"! My preference is to enjoy the recreational aspect of MTBing and I love nurturing our beginner riders.
Our family loves cycling and the benefits of being on a team and we feel good helping out with the team. Mountain biking inspires us every ride through a sense of adventure and being outdoors.
I mountain bike with my own children, and so coaching and helping out RSC whenever I can has been a natural progression. I see tremendous growth in my kids and the kids I coach. These kids do hard things on the bike and watching them tackle obstacles until they conquer them teaches them resilience and perseverance, gives them self-confidence, a work ethic, and fosters a strong bond of teamwork where it’s ok to try something new and potentially fail or succeed. This program is a huge part of my life and is transforming the next generation into healthy, responsible community members.
Mountain biking keeps you young at heart and is for all ability levels. It is a constant learning curve and there is always room for growth. Despite the wide ranges of bikers’ abilities, the mountain biking community as a whole is so supportive and down-to-earth. I am inspired by the seasoned riders who have made mountain biking a lifelong pursuit and pass down their knowledge, the newbies for trying something new and hard, and the kids for their fearlessness.

I started as a coach with Chris Berry in 2018 and joined the board starting in 2020 just in time for COVID. I love mtn biking and wanted to help kids learn and enjoy their time on bikes. I saw everyone riding the Mill Mtn trails on certain days of the week and I wanted to be involved. It has been my adrenaline rush since I left the military and it kept me in shape. It's been a rewarding experience being a part of a growing organization that wants to make a difference and grow youth ridership in our community.

A career on two wheels has given me so many gifts of experiences, friendships, and a broadened view of the world and people. Sharing a lifetime of access to the bike is a priority of mine and where better than right at home with young riders?
Mountain biking shows me that fitness, fun, and well-being can all exist in the same place. Its been a tool for my own personal growth and development and shown me so much of this planet that I just keep wanting to explore more!
Executive Director, 2025
Getting kids outside has always been a passion of mine, and what better way than on a bike! I want to inspire the next generation of young riders in our community to dream big, work hard, and develop a healthy lifestyle through biking and spending time outdoors. I believe that mountain biking gives kids opportunities to build confidence, resilience, and grit, skills that will serve them well beyond the bike. I'm also motivated to create positive spaces for families to connect and support one another.
Biking has always been one of my favorite ways to stay physically and mentally fit, especially when I'm out on the trail. There's nothing like being out in nature, with your sole focus being on the trail right in front of you. I'm also inspired by the way cycling brings people together, especially here in Roanoke. We've got a great community here!
