We're excited to share that Viana was selected as one of only 25 recipients of the She Sends Foundation Full Send Grant from more than 150 applicants. The grant provides seed funding to help launch this project.
The idea itself grew out of a conversation at a GRiT event in June. Coach Karen immediately said, "We should do this," suggested building a bikepacking gear library, and later forwarded Viana the She Sends grant application. Another parent suggested the New River Trail as a first expedition. After Viana completed RockStar this spring and talked about wanting to return with a group of girls, Karen and Viana's dad, Coach Aaron, started working together to turn those conversations into this series that caters to girls 5th grade to 12th grade.
Many people remain in their comfort zones, not realizing how much joy and adventure awaits when they try something new.
GRIT to RockStar exists to change that.
GRIT to RockStar encourages each participant to pursue personal growth and adventure through bikepacking, adventure cycling, and shared outdoor experiences. Every ride, camp, and conversation is designed to help girls discover they are capable of more than they ever imagined.
As Youth Project Ambassador Viana Garland explains:
"I don't think I'm extraordinary. I've just been given a lot of resources. There are probably lots of girls who could do this if they had the opportunity."
Our goal is to create those opportunities.
GRIT to RockStar is designed for girls in grades 5–12 who are interested in adventure cycling and bikepacking.
Participants do not need to be members of Roanoke Star Cycling, but they should:
● Have previous cycling experience and enjoy riding regularly.
● Have enough cycling experience to enjoy riding approximately 20 miles per day as part of a relaxed, supported group.
● Be excited to learn bikepacking, camping, navigation, and outdoor skills.
● Be willing to encourage and support one another as part of a team.
