Rising Stars is a collaborative intro to mountain biking program focusing on underserved communities in the region. Roanoke Star Cycling provides coaches and bikes; and the Boys and Girls Club provides bikes and storage; the Virginia Outdoors Foundation provides a grant (expiring in 2024) to transport kids to and from practices; RADAR Transit provides the transportation; and the two clubs provide participants, encouragement and support.
In 2023 we had more than 20 youth riding at weekly practices between May and November. Several of the kids did not know how to ride when we started, none had a mountain bike, and most would not have been able to ride without this program. We also work with Humble Hustle, to provide transportation to their guided hikes and assistance with their youth mountain biking day.
Our intent is not just to teach mountain biking skills, we want to:
encourage the confidence to address challenges
build self-reliance
introduce the riders to our unmatched outdoor environment
and to show how exercising can be fun
Roanoke Star Cycling is committed to getting more kids from vulnerable populations onto bikes and building a healthy and equitable community for children.
Our greatest need is for dedicated coaches to teach and support the kids and ancillary equipment, from biking shorts to protective eye and hand ware. Our next challenge is to find a way to permanently finance the transportation needed to get kids to and from practices and to engage more youth and get them into our racing programs.
