Roanoke Star Cycling is proud to host our annual Shred for RSC Fundraiser on August 29 from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM at Carvins Cove—and we invite you to partner with us in supporting the next generation of student-athletes.
This community-driven event brings together our youth mountain bike team, along with parents and coaches, to ride relay-style on a 4-mile loop throughout the day. Teams will challenge themselves to complete as many laps as possible while raising funds to support equipment, race fees, trail access, and program development.
Shred for RSC is more than just a fundraiser—it’s a full-day youth-focused event featuring breakfast, all-day refreshments, and an evening BBQ, with optional weekend camping at Camp Troy. It’s an opportunity for families, local supporters, and outdoor enthusiasts to come together around a shared passion for cycling, teamwork, and youth development.
Your sponsorship directly supports local student-athletes while also providing valuable visibility for your business within the Roanoke outdoor and family community. Sponsors will be recognized through event signage, social media, team communications, and on-site acknowledgments throughout the day.
By partnering with Roanoke Star Cycling, you’re investing in:
Youth fitness, confidence, and teamwork
Access to outdoor recreation and trail stewardship
A positive, supportive environment for student-athletes
We would be honored to have your support in making this event a success.
Yes. An adult will be entered at an age of 20 (your welcome) for the weighted calculations. Adults must be a RSC coach &/or parent. Fund raising minimums are required.
Yes, if the adult is a coach &/or parent. Fund raising minimums are required.
No. Teams are required to register in advance to help organizers plan the ride and to allow enough time to fundraise the required donation minimums.
Carvins Cove is open to the public so yes. We ask that they ride with their respective kid. It is also acceptable to get permission from the parent(s) if the adult rider is a friend of the family but not in the family.
No Carvins Cove is open to the public. We will be sharing the trails with all normal users….horses, hikers, & other bikers. Extreme courtesy will be demanded from all participants. “Kill” them with kindness is a requirement and points penalties will be levied for non-compliance or complaints by the public. Course Marshalls will ask trail users they come across how they were treated by the RSC participant. A negative report will demand a points penalty.
So far, we have identified that we need around 45 volunteers for a variety of “shifts” during the day. We would love your help. These positions include course marshal, bike sweep, cooking & cleaning. Sign up here or give an RSC organizer your email and availability so they can sign you up.
The kids should know the route. Marshalls will be staged at select intersections to make sure nobody can leave the area. Additionally, we will have 2 roving “bike sweeps” that will be on course.
It takes considerable effort & cost to organize and execute such an event, and to support our riders and coaches for a spring and fall season each year. Shred for RSC is intended to be a fun way to celebrate our riding community and help generate team sustainability to ensure future seasons are possible.
No. Teams are encouraged to pace and be strategic about who is riding, who is resting, who is eating & hydrating. Each team should plan to have one rider riding at all times, but each rider can rest as they trade off trail time.
There will be resources to repair bikes at the Red Barn. If the mechanical is on course then the participant should attempt to repair, wait for assistance from Sweep, or walk it back to the Red Barn. The “lap” will only count if the participant stays on course. Vehicular access is not allowed, so plan a short hike-a-bike to the Red Barn if it can’t be repaired on the trail.
Sweeps and marshals will have basic first aid training and carry small first aid kits. Both will have radios available with contact at the Barn for more resources, if needed. Riders should perform self care if possible, pedal/walk to nearest Marshal location, or wait for a sweep to come back around to assist. Other riders will be on the trail at the same time, so they can carry word ahead to the next Marshall location.
This hasn’t been solidified yet but optimally we will recognize those teams that earned the most money, got the most laps, & received the most points.
No. The choice is yours. Having your team fill the entire time available with a rider on course increases your chances for awards (above).
Yes. Plan with your team so someone is still riding laps, if possible.
YES!
Yes, we will rent porta potties.
RSC will provide breakfast, lunch, & dinner for all participants & volunteers. All others will be charged an admission fee to cover our costs and support our fundraising goals for the event.
Money raised will be added to the Team’s general fund and will be used for stuff like coach training, supporting “scholarship” efforts , funding special event costs, team “hardware” like tents, coolers, tools, etc.
1-lap penalty for not being courteous on course
1-lap penalty for not staying on course
1-lap penalty for unsportsmanlike behavior
Referee & Coordinator can levy other penalties at their discretion
If there is considerable rain before or during the event we will reschedule to the designated rain date Sunday, August 30. If during the event there is dangerous weather (lightning, high winds, excessive heat) the Coordinator will take necessary steps. Possible steps will be to pause the event, shelter in Red Barn or cars and if necessary to cancel the event.
It's important that we communicate that this event is simply an internal, team-only fun event that celebrates the end of the summer and beginning of our fall season.
This final lap does not count. All of your team must be at the Red Barn by 6PM.
You can set up camp after 12PM Friday, the day before. You must tear down camp by 12PM Sunday, the day after.
NO. Plan to bring water that you need for cooking/cleaning/drinking. Drinking water will only be available during the day for riders, volunteers and spectators.
See scheduled dates below for Info Meetings to ask specific questions and learn more about Shred for RSC. Wednesday, May 27 5:45 pm: During REC Practice at the Red Barn and 7 pm: After REC Practice for any coaches/parents that are riding.
