The RSC Day Captain is a key leadership role responsible for coordinating Wednesday night practice logistics and providing on-trail support for the youth mountain bike team. This person also fills in for coaches who cannot attend practice, ensuring continuity in training and a consistent, positive athlete experience. In addition to weekly practices, the Day Captain has the opportunity to assist with special team events throughout the season.
Work with the lead REC coaches to plan and coordinate the weekly Wednesday practice ride, including trail selection, timing, group organization, and safety considerations.
Arrive early to review practice goals, communicate the plan to coaches and volunteers, and assist with group assignments.
Ensure groups start on time and that the practice session flows smoothly.
If severe weather is forecasted, communicate the backup or cancellation plans with coaches, parents, and athletes.
Serve as a fill-in coach when assigned coaches are unavailable.
Lead skills sessions, trail rides, or group-specific practice components according to the team’s training plans.
Provide consistent instruction, safety oversight, and team culture reinforcement.
Lead or sweep riding groups as needed to ensure accountability and safe movement on the trails.
Conduct pre-ride safety checks and monitor trail and weather conditions.
Model safe riding, communication, and respectful trail etiquette.
Respond to minor injuries or issues and coordinate with coaches or families as needed.
Foster a welcoming, inclusive environment that supports skill progression and confidence in riders of all levels.
Offer encouragement, feedback, and guidance during practice.
Help athletes navigate challenges and celebrate achievements.
Clearly communicate practice plans, trail choices, updates, and expectations to parents and coaches.
Provide post-practice updates to coaches regarding group performance, rider needs, or trail concerns.
Communicate recurring equipment or training needs observed during rides.
Field questions from parents and help find the answer or the correct person who can answer their question.
Assist with planning, logistics, and on-site support for team special events such as:
Team kickoff gatherings
Skills clinics
Bike swap
Volunteer days
Rides
End-of-season celebrations
Help create engaging, memorable experiences for athletes and families.
Provide leadership and energy that strengthens team community and culture.
Confident and experienced mountain biker comfortable with varied terrain.
Experience working with youth or leading small groups (preferred).
Strong communication skills and a positive, team-oriented mindset.
CPR/Wilderness First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
Dependable and capable of stepping into coaching responsibilities as needed.
Primarily Wednesday evenings for practice coordination (2–4 hours).
Occasional additional time for team events, races, or special activities.
Reports to the Executive Director. Must be available Wednesdays from 5-8 pm from March 11-May 27, 2026
Compensation: $20/hour. Not to Exceed 5 hours per week without approval from ED
